Unit Description

There is a need for educators to better understand the unique learning needs of students with autism. Better understanding students on the autism spectrum and how they learn will lead to more positive learning outcomes, with an aim of encouraging full participation within diverse learning contexts.

This foundational unit discusses core features of the autism spectrum. You will examine fundamental diagnostic features of the autism spectrum, including characteristics related to social understanding, interactions and social communications, language features and flexible thinking. You will also explore restricted repetitive behaviours, interests and activities; cognitive processing and sensory processing; and other learning characteristics.

The core knowledge you develop will enable you to effectively understand learning profiles. In particular the strengths and needs of students on the autism spectrum taught within inclusive environments.
