Frequently asked questions

This course is ideal for those who already have an element of investigation required for their job. This course will equip you with the skills to analyse complex information, enhance security and protect public interests.

This course would satisfy the training requirement for a Private Investigator License. Students need to be aware, however, that there are other requirements to be met, in addition to a relevant training course, to be eligible for a license.

This course is designed for a broad field of investigations and intelligence, covering topics such as fraud and compliance. This course is not focused on law enforcement, although the results of investigations may require that a case be handed over to the police for penalties/charges to be applied.

Throughout the course, there is a cross-section of scenarios that cover state, federal, private and global jurisdictions. As a university-level offering, we avoid favouring a particular government approach. Instead, the content focuses on best practice approaches and is designed to educate in the principles and frameworks that will be broadly applicable, irrespective of the employer. Graduates will have opportunities to work in private industry as well as government, and therefore, the course has been developed with this in mind.

This course is an AQF Level 8 Graduate Certificate and provides a professional qualification in investigations and intelligence. The driving factor for creating this course was that the professional bodies in the field (AIPM and AIPIO) want to ‘professionalise’ the industry. A university-level qualification achieves this because of the stringent frameworks applied in developing university-level courses. The Graduate Certificate in Investigations and Intelligence is designed to prepare students for roles in any organisation, not only in government.

This Standard notes that Investigator Qualification provides minimum standards, namely Certificate IV. As this Graduate Certificate is a higher qualification, it supersedes this requirement. The content of this course aligns with the Australian Government Investigations Standard; however, if students go on to conduct a federally-run (Australian Government) investigation, they will need to separately comply with this Standard and the entity/organisation they’re working for needs to be accredited by the Australian Government.

No prior experience in working in the fields of investigations, intelligence or justice is required to be successful in this course.
