Drive organisational transformation through sophisticated and insightful data analytics

The Graduate Certificate in Data Science gives you the skills to turn data into insight and make decisions that drive organisational impact. Designed for professionals looking to enter or pivot into the data science field, this course covers core topics such as data mining, modelling and visualisation, helping you clearly communicate insights.

You will gain hands-on experience with industry tools like SQL, Tableau and Jupyter Notebook, building practical skills that make you job-ready by graduation.

Delivered in a fully online context over six months, this course offers flexible entry pathways and prepares you for roles in data analysis and decision support. Graduates can also continue into the Master of Information Technology with credit for completed units, giving them the opportunity to advance their career further.

Entry requirements

You can gain entry into the Graduate Certificate in Data Science with the following:

6-month program

  • A completed bachelor's degree (or higher qualification) in any discipline

or

  • A completed diploma (or higher qualification) in any discipline, with at least two years (full-time or equivalent) professional experience in biomedicine, information technology or mathematics and equivalent disciplines

or

  • Five years (full-time or equivalent) professional experience in biomedicine, information technology or mathematics and equivalent areas

Advanced standing

Students who successfully complete his award with a GPA of 4 or above (on a 7 point scale) are able to gain entry into the Master of Information Technology with advanced standing for units completed.

Course outcomes

You will produce evidence-based visualisations of data to inform leadership decisions and organisational initiatives. You will also demonstrate advanced ICT strategies to analyse business practices and system functionality to optimise business performance. The analytical skills you develop will help you evaluate business practices and investment strategies to solve complex problems in business improvement projects. Graduates of this course have the ability to analyse and interpret complex data sets to produce clear, evidence-based conclusions that support organisational decision-making and optimise business performance. Through hands-on and practical learning, you will also build ethical judgment, preparing you to contribute meaningfully to data-informed projects.

Microsoft Azure is a public cloud platform that is used for virtual computing, analytics, storage, networking and much more. Jupyter Notebook

Jupyter Notebook is a web-based interactive development environment for notebooks, code and data. It has a flexible interface that allows you to configure and arrange workflows in data science, scientific computing, computational journalism and machine learning. Jupyter Notebooks is used by large companies such as Trivago, Delivery Hero and Yelp.

Anaconda

Anaconda is a distribution of the Python and R programming languages for data science and machine learning that simplifies package management and deployment. With thousands of open-source packages and libraries, it is very popular among modern programmers.

R and RStudio

R is an open-source software program used for statistical analysis. You can use R to write a program and run the code independently of any other computer program. RStudio, used alongside R, is an open-source integrated development environment. It allows you to clearly see graphs, data tables, R code and output. Both R and RStudio offer advanced statistical methods and algorithms.

There is no professional board for data analytics. There are general IT professional bodies, such as the Australian Computer Society, and this board provides guidelines on education standards in IT. QUT aligns all of their courses with the Australian Computer Society. We are also an internationally recognised university with equally recognised academics.

Yes, in this course you will develop a greater understanding of problem-solving, abstraction, design, teamwork concepts and issues through ACS’s Core Body of ICT Knowledge (CBoK).

Yes, CSPs are available for all Information Technology courses, including bootcamps. CSPs allow domestic students to have a significant portion of their university or higher education fees subsidised by the Australian government.
