It is a condition that can affect the education of school-aged children, which is why supporting students with autism is a core part of Australia's inclusive education system. There is a continuing need for education professionals who have a nuanced understanding of autism within an education context.

Build a foundational knowledge of the autism spectrum, grounded in contemporary psychological theory, which informs inclusive and supportive teaching practice.
Inclusive classroom methodology
Employ classroom practices that support connectedness, a sense of belonging, collaboration and transitions in learning environments for learners on the autism spectrum and their families.
Identify potential barriers to achieving successful social and academic outcomes for learners with autism, and apply appropriate evidence-based strategies to enhance access, participation and achievement.
Meeting individualised needs
Develop effective learning profiles that harness the strengths, and meet the needs of students on the autism spectrum, as taught within inclusive environments.
There is a need for educators to better understand the unique learning needs of students with autism. Better understanding students on the autism spectrum and how they learn will lead to more positive learning outcomes, with an aim of encouraging full participation within diverse learning contexts.
This foundational unit discusses core features of the autism spectrum. You will examine fundamental diagnostic features of the autism spectrum, including characteristics related to social understanding, interactions and social communications, language features and flexible thinking. You will also explore restricted repetitive behaviours, interests and activitites; cognitive processing and sensory processing; and other learning characteristics.
The core knowledge you develop will enable you to effectively understand learning profiles. In particular the strengths and needs of students on the autism spectrum taught within inclusive environments.
Psychological theories of the autism spectrum are crucial to our understanding of autism within education contexts.
In this foundational unit you will learn about psychological theories of autism and the influence of co-occurring conditions in order to understand the learning profiles and needs of learners on the autism spectrum.
This unit builds on content from EUQ652 ‘Features of Autism’ and is suitable for educators, health, allied health, and disability professionals.

A vital aspect of meeting the needs of learners with autism is to establish collaborative relationships with families, fostering positive relationships and supporting transitions.
In this unit you will explore strategies and practices related to supporting connectedness, a sense of belonging, relationships, collaboration and transitions in learning environments for learners on the spectrum and their families.
This is a core building block of supporting the health, wellbeing and positive learning outcomes of learners on the autism spectrum.
