IT Diversity Scholarships 2020

Queensland University of Technology, as part of its ongoing commitment to diversity and inclusion, will offer scholarships to a number of women and people of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander descent who enrol to study a QUT Online Information Technology course.

QUT’s commitment to an inclusive vision

As an institution of higher learning, QUT recognises the unique responsibility it holds to help enact positive social change in Australia and internationally.

An important part of QUT’s vision is to provide more opportunities for students from all backgrounds to receive a tertiary education, opening the door to new possibilities in the lives of ordinary Australians.

To support this commitment to diversity and inclusion, QUT is offering scholarships to a number of women and non-binary people, and people of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander descent, who plan to study one of the following Information Technology courses through QUT Online in 2020:

Scholarships for women and non-binary people

There is a notable gender disparity at tertiary education level between men and women studying science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) courses. Completion of tertiary STEM education – particularly engineering and related technologies – is far lower among women.

The Australian Government Report ‘Advancing Women in STEM’ found that women accounted for only 15 per cent of domestic Engineering and Related Technologies undergraduate course completions in 2016 (p. 3).

With the financial support of a scholarship combined with the flexibility of online study, QUT Online will provide greater opportunities and support more women and non-binary people to study in the crucial field of information technology.

Scholarships for Indigenous Australians

QUT is dedicated to providing greater opportunities for people of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander descent to access higher education, particularly in STEM fields such as information technology, where there is a low participation rate compared to other fields of study.

The Australian Government’s 2018 Higher Education statistics showed that of the 19,981 people of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander descent who commenced tertiary study in 2017, only 416 studied Information Technology.

Information Technology is a crucial field of professional study, as technology increasingly becomes a greater focus of our society and economy. Providing scholarships to online postgraduate courses allows people of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander descent – who often live in rural and remote communities – to access tertiary education.

The application process

Eligible students, who are either female/other/non-binary, or of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander descent, must apply for the available scholarship, and the course must be completed within three years.

Successful applicants will receive a 25% discount on their course fees.
