Formalising skills with postgraduate study

By gaining a project management qualification, Jasmine hopes to take the next step up in her career in social services.

Jasmine’s story

After 15 years working in social services, Jasmine is well established as an experienced professional in her field. However, when she began to consider her next move into a more senior position, she found that her limited formal education presented a barrier. Jasmine is now studying a Graduate Certificate in Project Management with QUT Online to formalise her skills and become a more competitive candidate in the job market.

The next step in an amazing career

Jasmine’s rewarding career has taken her from working in community services within remote communities in Far North Queensland, to managing a women’s refuge, as well as working in mental health and supporting young people receiving carer payments.

She is incredibly passionate about helping vulnerable members of the community and using her skills to connect people with important services. After many years of working directly with her clients, Jasmine is now looking to utilise her experience in a role that allows her to lead community-focused programs and projects.

With this goal in mind, Jasmine applied for a Project Lead position assisting with the delivery of a new mental health psycho-social service in Melbourne. The position seemed perfect for her, and was aligned with her extensive experience in the social services field, but she missed out due to her lack of a formal qualification in project management. Jasmine has since found some work assisting with projects, but believes the key to leading them may be a postgraduate project management qualification.

‘I required more knowledge to make the next step into management, so this led me to QUT study online.’

Having now begun her Graduate Certificate in Project Management with QUT Online, Jasmine has found the course content to be practical and career-relevant. She says she has already gained a greater understanding of how to ‘break down a project into parts’, ‘focus on key knowledge areas’ and ‘[work] on a project with a team’ – and feels better equipped to apply for project management positions in the future.

Practical benefits of online learning

As a busy professional, Jasmine finds the online learning model to be a convenient and effective way of broadening her education. She is able to continue living and working in Melbourne while studying with QUT from the comfort of her home.

During Melbourne’s COVID-19 lockdowns, Jasmine also felt assured that her studies would continue uninterrupted, as her course had been designed and optimised for the online environment.

‘Overall, I guess there has been less impact on students studying online than it has on students who attend lectures on campus, and this reason is why online study is great as you never know what may pop up in your life.’

Jasmine is now eagerly awaiting her graduation so that she can update her resume with her new qualification, and secure her dream project management job.

The most exciting part about this is that I know I will be more equipped and confident to enter project management once I have graduated, which will hopefully get me the job that I want.
